Mine Development
Once demand for a resource has been recognized, there are several steps that must be taken
prior to extracting material. Bay Environmental Strategies, Inc. (BAY) can help you
through these steps to identify and develop a new nonmetallic mine operation.
Identification & Quantification of New Deposits
Finding and evaluating potential nonmetallic mine deposits prior to development allows
the operator insight to the economic value of the deposit as well as reduces unforeseen future
liabilities that may hinder development. BAY can evaluate the potential resource by:
- Determining overburden thickness & quantity
- Determining vertical & horizontal extent of deposit
- Identifying environmental sensitive areas - wetlands, waterways, etc.
- Identifying permits, zoning changes, setbacks
- Identifying potential groundwater issues
- Performing or evaluating for durability testing/sieve analysis
- Evaluating/identifying Chapter 30 or NR 135 permitting pathways
- Registering nonmetallic mine sites
Reclamation Planning & Zoning Changes/Modifications
The reclamation planning process normally goes hand in hand with the required zoning modifications.
The reclamation planning can go in two directions, depending on the specific situation.
If the mine is located near a navigable waterway, the permitting process would be permitted through
Wisconsin Administrative Code (WAC) NR 135. In any situation, BAY can provide turn-key services
through the permitting process by:
- Writing the reclamation plan & permit application
- Submitting zoning change/modification applications
- Providing guidance and participating in public meetings (Town and County Board)
- Wetland delineations
- Land Surveying
