Solid &
Hazardous Waste Services
The management of solid and hazardous wastes is a serious
challenge faced by most businesses. There are many legal,
moral, social, and financial liabilities associated with a
business’ waste management practices. It is up to a
business to reduce those liabilities to the extent practical.
Hazardous wastes may include anything from used fluorescent
light bulbs to spent paints and solvents. It is the responsibility
of the generator to determine whether the wastes are a solid
or a hazardous waste.
The waste handling program, as it is best known today, came
into being with the passage of the Resource Conservation and
Recovery Act (RCRA) of 1976. RCRA mandated the “cradle
to grave” management of hazardous wastes. Under RCRA,
businesses are responsible for wastes from the moment of generation
until the moment the wastes are either properly destroyed,
reused, or recycled. A generator is, however, responsible
for wastes even after landfill disposal or after handled by
a less-than-credible destruction or recycling facility. There
have been numerous occasions where a business was held responsible
for clean-up costs at landfills and other treatment sites,
years after the waste actually left the business facility.
Given such, it is important that a business work only with
reputable waste management and disposal firms.
